May 2014 to August 2014

These scarf designs came about through iterative explorations. Each one started with an idea and evolved based on how each swatch, test, and sample turned out.

I didn’t start with a set number of products or even the motivation to only designs scarves. Each design came to a point where I thought it was fully resolved.

Knit Lab V5 at The Clay Studio

Personal + Collaboration

August 23 - September 20 , 2014

Three week artist in residency at The Clay Studio. After four months of exploration and experimentation I setup and utilized my Knit Lab within the Clay Studio's educational gallery space.

During the residency I produced work utilizing a process developed earlier in the year, taught workshops, and shared the knitting and production process.

In preparation for Knit Lab V5 I collaborated with members of The Clay Studio staff and community to do a series of experiments knitting fabric, coating in ceramic slip, firing, and glazing.

The series of tests were done to determine explore some of the many variables that could be controlled through out the process. The variables we focused on where fabric density, slip recipes, firing temperatures, and glazes.

Window Cell Prototype

Personal

April 2015

Window Cell is a modular fabric screening system that can be used to create planar and three-dimensional surfaces. Window Cell elements can be made from many types of yarn and in any sizes. The overall dimensions of the installation can be made to fit any space.

The Window Cell system is a new iteration of work originally designed and developed by Jenny Sabin Studio for myThread Pavilion (commissioned by Nike Inc). Andrew worked in collaboration with Jenny in 2013/2014 for a third knitted pavilion. Originally the fabrication technique was used only for gallery exhibitions. Andrew is refining the technique into a repeatable system for residential and commercial installations.

Special thanks for Huntingdon Yarn Mill for sponsoring this project by donating skeins of Made In American Yarns, Wayfarer yarn.

Carpet Wool Tiles

Personal

June 2015

In 2013 I was introduced to Langhorne Carpet Mill - a carpet mill manufacturing wool carpets since 1930 in Penndel, Pennsylvania..

During my first tour I noticed many spools of yarn through out the factory that had small amounts of yarn left on them. While there wasn't enough yarn left to use in the production of 12' wide carpets there was plenty to use for small knitted items.

I began making small squares as tests to find the best way to knit the yarn. What developed was a series of squares at different sizes that can be used from coasters to trivets to floor mats.

Exciteables (aka Little Dudes)

Personal

June 2015

This project is hard to explain. Somehow these little dudes combine my interest in making (materials + technology), expression / communication, and connection.

My work falls somewhere within the overlapping worlds of design + manufacturing, craft + industry, education + community organizing.
